In-Demand Career: Software Developers

August 1, 2022

With a remarkably accelerating job outlook and exceptional salary, software developers are becoming some of the most sought-after professionals in the job market.

In Kentucky, the annual mean salary for a software developer is $97,810, or approximately $47 an hour. Nationally, the job outlook for software developers is 22 percent, which is much faster than average, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Typically, prospective software developers are expected by employers to have at least a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology, or a related field, such as mathematics or engineering.

Software developers design computer application programs and often work on a team with programmers, quality assurance analysts, testers and computer and information systems managers. They not only design and develop software but also recommend software upgrades for customers’ existing programs and ensure systems continue to function smoothly after development.

Software developers have many opportunities for advancement, including roles such as project management specialist and computer and information systems manager.
