Work Matters: Back to school for kids and adults alike

August has arrived, and with it comes a familiar late-summer rhythm across Central Kentucky. Store aisles are packed with backpacks, yellow school buses are tuning up their engines and parents are checking off supply lists. We rightfully celebrate this time as a fresh start for our children and youth.

But as executive and consortium director of Heartland Adult Education, I want to pose a question to the adults in our region: “When was the last time you gave yourself a fresh start?”

Somewhere along the way, we bought into the myth that back-to-school has an expiration date, that once you hit a certain age, your educational journey is locked in, for better or worse. But learning doesn’t carry an age limit, and the desire to build a better life for yourself and your family certainly doesn't disappear when you turn 18, 30, 50 or older.

Whether life got in the way years ago, or you simply hit a glass ceiling in your career, education remains the single most effective tool to transform your circumstances.

At Heartland Adult Education, serving adult learners across Hardin, LaRue, Breckinridge, Grayson, and Hart counties, we see proof of this transformation every single day.
